The global fast-food chain has removed a holiday commercial created with generative AI after receiving widespread public disapproval.

The brief spot was developed with the help of AI-generated video and was first uploaded on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Viewer Criticism and Removal

Following its publication, commenters criticized the use of AI in the commercial. Several labeled it "disturbing" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This moment is an key lesson as we investigate the effective use of generative technology," commented a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was developed for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed various situations that can go wrong during the festive season, under the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Trend of AI Commercials

Commercials that feature AI tools have become a growing phenomenon among large brands, notably for the holiday period.

  • Coca-Cola has recently launched consecutive AI-created Christmas ads.
  • Technical Challenges: Because clips made with generative AI are prone to distort the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also sparked fears about job displacement in the creative industry, with some critics stating it might reduce opportunities for production staff.

Response from the Creators

Following the commercial being pulled, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, stood by the advert.

Bridge claimed, the development took "seven weeks" and involved generating "thousands of takes" which were then shaped in post-production "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This was not an AI trick," Bridge asserted. "It was a proper commercial."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's ad was largely criticized, the reception for other AI-generated holiday ads has been varied.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created holiday spot from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a 61% "positive feedback" from the public.

However, various brands have also encountered backlash for employing AI in marketing. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some described as "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The incident underscores the ongoing conversation within the marketing and creative sectors about the trade-off between new tools and creative integrity.
